..thoughts on the 88/89 Niners....

I just watched the Niners 88 and 89 Superbowl videos (which I rented from the SF library) and here are a couple of interesting observations. When Roger Craig made that run in 1988 against the LA Rams, the one where he ran over the entire Rams Defensive, hi kneeing his way into the secondary and blowing people up-in that game Roger Craig ran for 3 TD's and 190 yards...I mean imagine if the GG franchise had been around way back then? How cool would that have been. But whats great about watching those videos is to realize how much of a business the NFL has become...back then they all had those mesh baseball caps, and grey sweatpants, I mean there was NO security at Training Camp? Now it's a whole new concept. I had those same kind of thoughts when I stumbled upon an old VHS recording of the 1981 Superbowl where M.Allen reversed field and made what some people call the best run in Superbowl history (if not the NFL)

which is the kind of scouting I do...trends...all the way back to 1988
But seriously do you remember going to school the next day and emulating Roger Craigs high knee pounding running style?
I mean do you remember Jerry Rice splitting the Giants DB's and taking it to the house and then, after the game was locked up, in the bag going out into the street and playing 2 on 2 passing attack football, time outs for the damn mini van coming down the block, almost running into the yellow bug parked on the corner, denting the hood of the gold Z that your coke head, 80's wanna be neighbor was always washing on the weekends.
Do you remember the Philly Eagles playing in the fog bowl?
Or bad ass late 80's Eric Wright and Ronnie Lott.
If there is one player I'd say embodies my love for football it would be Ronnie Lott. I mean he was an Old School football player, made from the same mold as Jim Brown. And that's coming from a me, a lover of the offense, a high school Wide Receiver (albeit one with a serious case of the muffs when it came to the "catching" part of playing receiver) But that's not the point. The point is I went to Rocklin Training Camp in 8th grade with my buddies Diff and Paige and Dave Nichol. and we watched the Niners training camp and then after missing out on a Joe Montana autograph and somehow having wandered into the players parking lot (how different is football now-with the secret service, business like security) we came face to face with Ronnie-fucking-Lott. Ronnie Lott of the superbowl winners. Ronnie Lott of game winning INT's. Ronnie Lott the hardest hitter in football. and when we shyly asked for an autograph while he sat next to his convertible Jetti Rabbit, you know what we notcied? You know what we talked about when school started up that fall? After our Summer run in with Ronnie Lott?
Fucking guy had amputated his pinkie.....
Amputated his pinkie so he could keep playing football. That's what we had notcied when he was signing our Niners yearbooks.
Ronnie Lott.
That's why I love football.
